Italy passes to Poland

October 1, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Like any sensible and sentient human, we are deeply Italophilic here at Europhobe. It is not only the great food, attractive people, and general beauty of the bel paese that attracts us, but the fantastic road-show entertainment that is Italian politics. Unfortunately, Professore Prodi appears to have decided that sensible politics are now the order of the day – probably the only possible rebalancing that was possible after Silvio’s endless twirls as pagliaccio-in-chief (though to il cavaliere’s credit, he was the first Italian leader since Benito Mussolini to survive from one election to another). Here’s how we like to remember him:

No matter, it would seem Europe has a new leader (or should we say “double” leader) to fill this spot. We are increasingly amused by the seemingly endless hilarity that the Polish Kaczynski twins (no relation to the Unabomber, rather this charming couple) seemed to provide. Now that their government has collapsed, we fully expect their election campaign to prove as amusing as their reign. While we know that Italian politics in Italy remains as absurd as ever, we are especially glad that the migratory Poles around the EU will ensure that we all get a chance to watch this election happen (though we would point out that the fantastically named Donald Tusk was having difficulty getting meetings with footballers last time we czeched – they were too busy “grooming their designer stubble” the Guardian is good enough to tell us).
